The mission of PhD course in Animal and Food Science aims to develop new knowledge and to produce innovation in food products for human and animal, ensuring quality, process innovation, added value in supply chains food, ethical and environmental sustainability and biodiversity protection.

The course aims to train highly skilled professionals able to work autonomously in the filed of research, scientific experimentation and application of specific methods related to Animal and Food Science. Positions for graduates of this program mainly concern universities, industry, or institutions involved in animal and food science.

The PhD program consider two main research areas, "Animal Science" and "Food Science", sharing common approaches and methodologies of research. The course trains Ph. doctors with extensive knowledge and skill needed to plan and carry out professional projects or research activities, with the required know how to act as protagonist in the complex work conditions of the animal and food production sector.

It brings together researchers and students working in the fields of Animal Science, Chemicals, Agricultural genetics, Food technology, Microbiology, Agriculture, and Veterinary medicine, belonging to three different Departments of the University of Padua:

Department of Agronomy, Food, Natural resources, Animal and Environment (DAFNAE)

Department of Comparative Biomedicine and Food Science (BCA)
Department of Animal medicine, Production and Health (MAPS)
A further collaboration is established with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment of the University of Perugia.

The Ph.D course is held in Agripolis, a campus for students in Legnaro, a town close to the city center of Padova and near Venice.

The course offers research activities in the fields of Animal and Food Science under the supervision of one or more supervisors. Advanced courses are designed to provide tools on Applied biostatistics with the use of different software, including “R”, Safety and security in the research activities, Scientific communication, Literature research and resources, Ethic and science, and an English language training course.

The training course is expected that each student in the PhD are assigned a scientific topic and a tutor, chosen among the members of the teaching staff of the school, with the ability to support even external tutor. The activity of each student is evaluated by the college teachers at the end of each year of the course and the development of research activity is monitored and addressed through periodic collegial presentation of the progress of the research that will help form the doctoral thesis.

The final examination of the research conducted in the three years you can get the title of Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor Europaeus or if some conditions are met (English thesis, stay in a European country other than Italy for at least three months, international commission of examination).

Strong cooperation with a number of other universities across the world, with Italian and European organizations of producers, private companies, and public institutions allow jointed research activities, seminars and periods of stage. Attendance to stages abroad for some months, International meetings and conferences is strongly recommended. The final thesis consist in a collection of peer reviewed papers published in top ranking scientific journals.
